Forthcoming projects with Keita Takahashi, Ken Wong and others

Annapurna Pictures expands into video games with Annapurna Interactive

Annapurna Pictures, the film company behind films Her and Zero Dark Thirty, has announced today that it is launching Annapurne Interactive, a company that will produce and publish video games.

The company already has two projects on the slate for Spring 2017: Giant Sparrow’s What Remains of Edith Finch and Jason Roberts’ Gorogoa, and the team will be looking to collaborate with both well-known and upcoming indie developers to produce games that are "personal, emotional, and push boundaries". With that in mind, they’ve also signed projects from Funomena and their creative director Keita Takahashi, creator of Katamari Damacy, and also Mountains, led by Ken Wong of Monument Valley fame.

At the wheel of the new publisher will be a crack team of video game veterans whose credits include God of War, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, Flower and Journey.

Annapurna’s founder and CEO, Megan Ellison, said: “I’ve had a great passion for video games for as long as I can remember. Growing up, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was one of my all-time favorites. My brother and I ran up quite a bill calling the 1-900 numbers for tips on those games, before the internet provided game-guides. The artistry and diversity of interactive storytelling is exciting and we look forward to exploring the limitless possibilities in gaming. We want to empower artists across this medium to make Annapurna Interactive their home and I believe we’ve assembled the perfect team to make that happen."

The company will be operating out of West Hollywood.
