Apple sent its CEO to Valve’s Washington headquarters last week with a plan to forge a partnership to directly compete with existing home consoles, according to an unverified report.
It is unknown what Tim Cook had discussed with Valve managing director Gabe Newell last week, while the suggestion that both met has still not been confirmed.
Yet Cult of Mac, a news website which publishes rumours that sometimes turn out to be accurate, claims Apple is “planning a full-on assault to take over the living room”.
“This assault won’t just be limited to the long-rumoured Apple HDTV set, but will also include a revolutionary home console as well,” the publication claimed.
Such claims have lingered as rumour for more than a year, but have not picked up beyond this.
Cult of Mac claims “Apple is working on a television set with an iTunes-integrated touch screen remote and Siri-like voice command technology, and come with an Apple-branded, Kinect-like video game console”.
Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of the technology and media empire, was quoted in his biography as having conceived plans for creating an Apple television set. It is claimed that the system will release by the end of the year.
Valve, a company which routinely experiments both on games and interface, has already expanded its Steam games service to play on living room television sets.
The company already has its Steam service available on Macs, with a simplified version available on iOS and Android devices.
Valve was recently engulfed by rumours that the company is attempting to build its own games console.
