Ubisoft is staying true to its promise of more diversification with the reveal of a transgender character starring in Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate.
Eurogamer reports that the game will feature trans male Ned Wynert, who appears as a supporting character who offers quests to main protagonists Jacob and Evie Fry.
The publisher has also altered its opening disclaimed. It used to explain that the game was "designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs" but now reads: "Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities."
Last year’s AC: Unity was criticised for not offering players the chance to play as female characters in its multiplayer mode, with Ubisoft giving conflicting accounts of why this is not the case. CEO Yves Guillemot later promised that future titles would offer more diversity. Indeed, this year’s game features two leads, one of which is female.
"Inclusiveness is something that’s super important for us as a team," Syndicate’s creative director Marc-Alexis Ct said. "We’ve made a good push towards diversity and how we approach different subjects in the game."
