Buyout 'paves way for comprehensive AI solution'

Autodesk acquires AI middleware firm Grip

Autodesk has acquired certain technology-related assets and hired staff from AI middleware firm Grip, the company has announced.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

As part of the deal, Autodesk has bought the Grip Character Control System AI tool, which implements behavioural trees for NPCs.

Meanwhile, the Grip Digital Extra System – which helps manage large amounts of NPCs – has also changed hands.

All developers at the company have also been hired by Autodesk.

“The acquisition accelerates Autodesk’s strategy to offer a more complete, simplified solution for the creation of believable interactive characters,” said Autodesk VP of games Marc Stevens.

“The technology and expertise acquired complement Autodesk’s existing Gameware offerings, including Autodesk Kynapse artificial intelligence middleware,” he added.

“This transaction will enable us to offer game developers a more comprehensive AI solution."
