Bethesda’s Hines teases unannounced 2017 title to bolster already-packed release schedule

UPDATE: Hines has since tried to retract his statement via a tweet, saying: "I probably just had a concussion from the beating I took online and was rambling. Ignore." Though it’s hard to know from that whether there’s no further title this year or not.

Bethesda’s VP of marketing and PR, Pete Hines, revealed to Tek Syndicate at PAX West that the company had a further title to release this year. That comes as something of a surprise, partly because of its September already, so the firm is leaving it a little late, but also because its release line-up is already looking bountiful.

"We even have a game coming out this year that we haven’t even told anyone about yet," said Hines, adding that he wouldn’t even confirm whether it was a new IP or not.

Bethesda made a big deal at E3, and rightly so, that all its announced titles were coming in 2017. Which was something of a kick in the face for many publishers and platform holders that were revealing trailers for games that wouldn’t be seen until late the following year.

Bethesda’s line-up for this year currently contains Dishonored: Death Of The Outsider (15th September), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Switch (Q3 2017), The Evil Within 2 (October 13th), Wolfenstein II (October 27th), plus Fallout 4 VR and Doom VFR as well.

The fan-pleasing strategy of short wait times, and the impressive secrecy during development which that requires, shows that Bethesda is capable of keeping significantly-sized products under its hat. However, the release schedule does point to this being a mobile title, on the lines of Fallout Shelter, a remastered title, or another VR take.

Even with those three options though, it could still be a significant release, with Shelter doing very well for the company and VR headsets calling out for more top-end content.
