Free-to-play studio Big Fish has grown by double-digit figures for the 11th consecutive year running.
The US firm reeled in $266 million (£160m) in gross revenue in 2013, exceeding its 2012 taking of $220 million (£133m) by a considerable amount.
Growth of the company was driven largely by the success Big Fish has had in the mobile free-to-play space, with titles such as Big Fish Casino and Fairway Solitaire.
In the last two years, Big Fish has become one of the top mobile games company in terms of revenue and breadth of titles with several top-grossing games and almost 400 individual titles on iOS alone.
“Big Fish is the world’s largest producer of casual games, and we are one of the few companies with a legacy PC games business that has successfully transitioned to mobile devices and, due to a strong history in data analytics, quickly adapted to the rapidly growing free-to-play business model, all while maintaining robust revenue and profit growth,” said Big Fish founder and CEO Paul Thelen.
“Since 2008 Big Fish has been at the forefront of [mobile games] growth and we will continue to be. We exited 2013 by successfully transitioning our company into a mobile free-to-play games company, exiting the year with a run rate that accounted for more than half of Big Fish’s overall gross revenue.”
In 2013, Big Fish manage to score several hit games that ranked #1 in their respective genres as measured by gross revenue. Apple also named Big Fish Casino as a top-ten grossing app for 2013.
Big Fish plans to become a free-to-play mobile games company, and it is accelerating its plans in 2014 with the launch of over 20 new free-to-play titles. The studio release just three mobile free-to-play titles in 2012, and five in 2013.
