Blizzard considers F2P Starcraft 2 multiplayer

Blizzard is considering making the multiplayer to its hit RTS title Starcraft 2 free-to-play, the game’s lead designer has said.

As reported by PCGamesn, Dustin Browder said it was looking at the option of implementing the pay model to its game, but as yet was unsure how to integrate it into the existing title.

“We’re looking at free to play as an option for the multiplayer,” he said.

“We don’t know how we would monetise it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them.”

Browder was speaking at the Valencia eSports Congress, and was answering in response to suggestions that Starcraft 2 would struggle in the competitive gaming scene given its full price tag and two upcoming expansions.

Other eSports games include free-to-play titles such as League of Legends, Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2.

Blizzard is currently developing Starcraft 2 expansion Heart of the Swarm, but has yet to announce a release date for the title.
