UK heavyweight Sumo Digital has stepped in to prevent the disintegration of CCP’s Newcastle studio, purchasing the team and adding it to Sumo’s portfolio. CCP Newcastle remains intact as it switches ownership, with Owen O’Brien staying at the helm as studio director, ready to continue taking advantage of the studio’s VR expertise.
34 jobs have been saved as a result of this, with the distinct possibility of the team continuing to work on CCP games. Sumo Digital is partnered with CCP to bring to life Project Nova, a first-person shooter set in the EVE Online universe. So it makes perfect sense to integrate a team which has spent years living and breathing EVE as it worked on projects like EVE: Valkyrie. And if that team happens to have world-class knowledge of virtual reality, even better.
“As we continue to expand this was a great opportunity to bring an experienced, talented and tight-knit team on board,” says Paul Porter, managing director of Sumo Digital.

Sumo is hiring extensively across all of its studios, including Sheffield, Nottingham and Pune in India. Its job site hasn’t yet been updated to reflect opportunities available at the new Newcastle studio, but we’re assured that such opportunities do exist and it will be strengthening the team in the near future.
