CESA, the organisers of the Japanese CEDEC development conference, have announced their plans for this year’s edition of the show.
Marking CEDEC’s tenth anniversary, this year will see the conference grow to its biggest ever, with the clear aim of being Japan’s premier game development event.
CEDEC 2008, which takes place from September 9th to the 11th, will focus around the theme of ‘Facing the Future – For Next Ten Years’. The official statement reads: ‘This year marks the tenth event since CEDEC’s start in 1999. At this turning point of the year, we’ll look back at the past of the Japanese games industry from a game development skills standpoint, while looking towards the next ten years.’
CESA also mentions that the content for this year’s event has been determined with an eye to increasing the quality of the presentations as a whole. Last year’s popular ‘Imagire Day’ will return, joined this time by an AI day, CEDEC Labs and specific tracks dedicated to programming, visual arts, design, production, sound, mobile, network and business & law, ‘greatly expanding’ the range of content on offer.
In addition to talks and presentations, the conference will also offer free ‘sponsored sessions’ from game tools and middleware providers, as well as ‘PR seminars’ where the latest goods and technologies will be presented. The CEDEC Awards will return as well, which awards not games but the skills and techniques contained within them, celebrating the merit of techniques and developers that advance the craft of game development.
Sessions announced include ‘Introducing techniques used in Metal Gear Solid 4′ by Kojima Productions’ technical director Kunio Takabe, ‘Introducing Global Illumination for Realtime CG – a Sonic Unleashed Case Study’ from Sega’s Yoshihisa Hashimoto and ‘Game Development with Squirrell’ by Square Enix programmer Takashi Kamio.
