Crytek’s Warface to experiment with Battle Royale mode

It was only a matter of time until the games industry saw another big triple-A developer try to enter the Battle Royale genre, we just weren’t sure who it would be.

Crytek is going to be the next developer to give the popular game mode a go. The German developer’s free-to-play game Warface is getting an ‘experimental’ PVP game mode called Battle Royale. Announced on the blog for the game, which is published by Russian publisher My.com, the new mode will take inspirations from other modes within the game.

"Warface has a broad variety of game modes available," the developers wrote on the blog. "Some are more conservative and classic, suited to the 5-on-5 scenarios, whilst some others are more dynamic and perhaps even, arcade. With Battle Royale, we wanted to create something on the thin verge between the two, and here you have it: quick-paced combat with an element of the unknown – you never know which gun you’re going to get, with action taking place on the largest PvP map ever seen in the game."

The new game mode will be available in the next update and only for a limited time before user feedback is gathered for later improvements. New achievements will be added along with a new map for the game mode.

Warface was originally developed by Crytek’s Kiev office and also developed on the older CryEngine 3. The free-to-play online FPS is currently only available on PC following the discontinuation of support for the Xbox 360 version in 2015. Another My.com game has appeared on the current generation of consoles with MMORPG Skyforge going into Xbox One Game Preview.

It’s possible then that Warface could return to consoles if the genre addition is successful, although, with both its PC competitors hitting the Xbox console within the next month, it might be a bit too little too late for the game to secure a consistent player base.
