Could you introduce your company to our readers who might not know your role or goals?
Sumo Digital is a successful independent video games developer with its roots in Sheffield, UK and an Art Studio in Pune, India.

Our goals are to continue managing the growth of our studio: from 12, to 240 people over the past ten years, continuing to service the needs of existing clients, whilst developing relationships with new clients.

What distinguishes your company from similar outfits? In other words, what’s unique about your organisation?
We recently celebrated our 10th Anniversary as an independent games developer. Throughout that period we’ve shipped in excess of 30 titles across all platforms with a comprehensive range of publishers.

The sensitive, creative and intelligent use of Licensed IP has become one of Sumo Digital’s core competencies. In Q4 of 2012 the company shipped three major titles: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, LittleBigPlanet 2: Cross-Controller (DLC), and the BAFTA Games Award nominated Nike+ Kinect Training.

We have evolved from 12, to 240 people in ten years, operating across two international offices: Sheffield, UK and Pune, India, making us one of the largest employers in the UK games industry.

What excites and/or encourages you about the games industry today?
With a growing number of hardware comes the need for specialist games to showcase the raw power and technology. As an independent games developer, we are in a position to benefit as our clients turn to the expertise of the games community to extend their IP across the spectrum of hardware.

At the same time, new hardware and new distribution models continue to empower the independent developer with the opportunities in self-publishing. Many independent developers, including some of the Develop Awards finalists, have success stories to acknowledge this.

Looking at the Develop Awards finalists, what does it say to you about today’s games industry?
There is a strong line-up in each category at this years Develop Awards which is a testament to the health of the industry. The increased penetration of mobile titles across the categories is a reflection of the exponential growth in consumer demand to become engaged with games on the floating screen, and an incentive to the commercial rewards on offer to those who invest the finances and energy into building an engaging brand.

Do you have a message for the Develop Awards finalists?
Congratulations to everyone for making the shortlist. It’s going to be a fantastic evening to celebrate with a room full of talent across the industry’s disciplines.

Was there anything else you wanted to say about your company or the Develop Awards?
We’d like to thank everyone involved with Sumo Digital for their contribution over the previous ten years. We look forward to celebrating the next ten years.

The Develop Awards will take place on July 10th at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Brighton.
