Disney and Marvel shut down the Marvel Heroes games

Disney and Gazillion Entertainment have both confirmed the termination of their partnership and the closure of the MarvelHeroes series of games.

The MMO started on PC in 2013 and has been free-to-play since, with regular content updates, and themed updates around the release of movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The game was ported to Xbox One and PS4 earlier this year.

According to a Kotaku report, fans of the game began to suspect something was up after the developers missed several seasonal and weekly community updates. In a statement from Marvel to Kotaku, a representative said, "“We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.”

Gazillion Entertainment also shared an update on the news and a roadmap for the ‘sunset period’ of the game.

The original deal for the license was a ten-year plan signed in 2009. While the future of the studio itself hasn’t been discussed, but according to the Kotaku report, many staff have been told not to come to work. After the game launched several team members were also laid off.
