We don’t know the name of it yet, but Disney’s streaming service both is a thing and – according to reports – is coming towards the end of 2019. This would tie it in roughly with the launch of Star Wars Episode IX, so you can see why it may well go down that way.
The rumour comes courtesy of Variety, which details how the old school studios of the film and TV industry are trying to keep pace with Netflix. Disney previously worked hand in hand with the ubiquitous streaming platform, but announced not too long ago plans to break off and form its own, new republic. The rebels.
The new service – Disney On Demand, as it hasn’t been called – will incorporate movies from the studio’s main output and its subsidiaries. This means as well as your classic Disney animations and upcoming movies from the studio, there’ll be all the Marvels and Star Wars-es and everything else you could think of that lives in the House of Mouse.
One recent confirmation was that a new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars would come to Disney’s platform, while a live-action Star Wars series set after the events of Return of the Jedi would also make its presence felt at some point.
With Dumbo, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Frozen 2, and others dead certs for whatever Disney calls its streaming service, it’s sure to be a popular option for consumers – and genuine competition for Netflix.
