EA launches indie label EA Originals

EA’s Play event yesterday may have focused on big blockbuster brands, but the publishing giant is looking to work more with smaller developers, too.

The company has announced it will be funding and releasing projects from indie developers under its brand new EA Originals label.

Fe, from developerZoink, will be the first game to be released through EA’s new indie initiative.

This new label follows EA’s successful partnership with indie studio Coldwood on Unravel, released in February.

All profits from the games published through EA Originals will go back to the developers making them, EA said. It’s not yet clear whether EA retains the IP to these projects.

Executive Vice President of EA Studios Patrick Sderlund stated: Making games is hard. It’s a hard business. These developers have taken on the risk of developing a new IP, and great games deserve to be played.

So with EA Originals, we want the profits from these games to go into the hands of the studios making them. We want them to be recognized for their work, so they can keep innovating and creating, and so the players get to play more and more amazing games.”

Apart from Fe, EA focused on its blockbuster franchises last night, Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1, and teased Star Wars and Mass Effect.
