Extra-Life charity event raises $5.5m for children’s hospitals

Gaming-for-charity drive Extra-Life 2014 broke previous fundraising efforts this past weekend, raising at least $5.5m for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Extra-Life’s annual charity effort revolves around a 24-hour gaming marathon, where teams and individual participants gather to livestream games and raise money for good causes.

Games Industry reports the charity brought in around $5.1m during the 24-hour main event, and has since accumulated another $400,000 according to the drive’s official website.

Donations will continue to be accepted through the rest of the year, and a post from the Extra-Life organization adds that the fundraising has kept up well since the end of the livestreaming event:

"Just a quick post to update everyone. We are now at about 5.4 Million raised and donations continue to pour in! Thank you for doing so much for the kids! Remember donations can be submitted all the way until Dec 31st, but please don’t wait if you’re holding offline donations. Get them in and counted!”
