Final Fantasy 7 Remake episodes will be full-size games

Square Enix’s episodic approach to Final Fantasy 7 Remake will adopt an entirely different model to its more recent episodic release, Hitman.

GameSpot reports that producer Yoshinori Kitase has said in the latest Game Informer magazine that instead the RPG will be more like how the company approached Final Fantasy XIII, which got two full-scale spin-offs in the form of XIII-2 and Lightning Returns.

Hitman, in contrast, is releasing incremental additions on a monthly schedule, slowly filling out to a single full release.

"It will essentially be a full scale game for each part of the multi-part series,” Kitase said. In XIII, each instalment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense.

"Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a pre-existing story, so it wouldn’t really make sense if that isn’t encompassed in a multi-part series. So if we’re just looking at each of these parts, one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game."

Kitase also reiterated that, despite FFVII’s cherished status, the publisher isn’t going to be shy about making some major changes to the game.

"I, along with [Tetsuya] Nomura-san and [Kazushige] Nojima-san–who are involved with the remake–were also involved with the original Final Fantasy," he added. "We were the people who created it, so in that sense, we don’t think anything is untouchable. That isn’t to say we’re changing everything."

The game was announced, to much excitement, at E3 last year.
