First eGames event to hit Rio this August

The first ever eGames event will take place in Rio de Janeiro on August 15th and 16th.

Taking place slap bang in the middle of the Rio Olympics, the event will be held at British House in Parque Lage, Rio. The location is at the foot of the Corcovado, home to Christ the Redeemer and is in an historic area that was originally built in the 19th century.

Teams from across the world will represent their countries in the event, and will compete for national pride and medals, much like the Olympics, instead of prize money as is usually the case with eSports. Of course the entire event will be broadcast online for those not in Rio to enjoy.

The UK’s video game industry is world class, a result of the incredible pool of talent and innovation that exists within the sector,” said Culture Minister, Ed Vaizey. I’m delighted that the eGames event will be held at British House at a time when the world’s eyes will be turning to Rio, and wish all the competitors the best of luck."

"We are honoured to have been invited by the UK Government to be in the British House to show the eGames to the world.” said Wim Stocks, Chief Operating Officer, International eGames Group. The venue is truly special and completely unique, the same qualities of which will be emulated in the eGames.”

There is currently no word of what games will be played at the event or the players that will be taking part. However with The International 6 concluding just days before the eGames it would be a surprise to see Dota 2 at the event.
