Former French minister slams Assassin’s Creed: Unity’s depiction of French Revolution

A former minister for the French Socialist Party has criticised the depiction of key figures in the French Revolution in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Unity.

"[The game] presents an image of hatred of the Revolution, hatred of the people, hatred of the republic which is rampant in today’s far-right,” Jean-Luc Mlenchon told The Telegraph. "It is propaganda against the people, the people who are (portrayed as) barbarians, bloodthirsty savages.”

Mlenchon went on to describe former French Queen Marie-Antoinette as a cretin” who in the game is celebrated as a poor little rich girl" and criticises the sympathetic depiction of King Louis XVI, whom he describes as treacherous”.

Even more infuriating for Mlenchon is the depiction of Maximilien de Robespierre who is regarded as a hero of the Revolution and is widely celebrated for his humanitarian campaigning.

"The man who was our liberator at a certain moment of the Revolution, Robespierre, is presented as a monster. In 1789 there were the poor aristocrats, and they are presented as fine upstanding people."
