MCV Retail Survey 2007 salutes Microsoft

After a storming year of success, Microsoft took the lion’s share of the praise in the 2007 MCV Retail Survey, with Nintendo also attracting a great deal of commendation from video game stores all across the country.

The star-studded release of Halo 3 – which saw high calibre celebrity endorsement from the likes of Pharrell Williams and Christian Slater – put Microsoft top of the list in the ‘highlight of the year’ poll, while also winning ‘best attitude and quality to retail’ and ‘best overall company’. The survey also considered Xbox 360 most likely to win the next-gen console battle.

Special mention should also go to Nintendo, which performed nearly as well in the polls, finishing just behind Microsoft in a number of key categories. The success of Wii finished just behind the release of Halo 3 as the highlight of the year with 30 per cent of the vote, while retailers considered Nintendo the second best overall company with 23 per cent. Nintendo won’t be overly enamoured with the category it did top, winning 57 per cent of the vote for the ‘biggest disappointment of the year’ for lack of Wii stock.

Despite worries over supermarket trade infringement and discounting on new releases, the results of the survey also show general optimism from retail, with a whopping 85 per cent feeling confident about business in 2008, and 73 per cent predicting greater Christmas takings this year than last.
