Mobile giant DeNA cuts around 50 staff in Singapore

Nintendo’s mobile partner DeNA has laid off the majority of its employees in its Singapore office as part of a ‘reshaping’.

The Japanese mobile firm has reportedly let go approximately 50 workers, with an unspecified number being instead transferred to its Vietnam outlet in Hanoi, which currently houses around 100 staff. The Singapore office will remain open for the time being.

In October, DeNA’s stock price took a hit as its first mobile app created with Nintendo – Miitomo – failed to impress investors.

Following that, the company reported slumping figures for its financial Q2 – especially in the ‘China and other’ region, where sales revenue fell from 2.9 billion (£15.7m) to 2.1 billion (£11.3m) yen.

“DeNA Group is continually evaluating its business operations to ensure that it’s structured in the best possible way to deliver high-quality mobile games to consumers worldwide,” Tomoyuki Akiyama, global public relations representative for DeNA, told Tech in Asia.

“As a part of this process, we have decided to reshape the structure of our Southeast Asian operations and integrate part of our Singapore office’s capabilities into our Hanoi office, along with a reduction in workforce in Singapore. The office will be reorganized in a phased manner but we plan to continue our operations in Singapore next year.”
