New SKUs and download centres boost DS sales

Nintendo UK has received an overwhelmingly positive response to its new range of DS colours and in-store DS centres, the firm has told MCV.

Nintendo released its Red, Green and Turquoise DS SKUs last week, along with new in-store centres that allows consumers to download demos of DS software onto their console. And Nintendo has told MCV that it’s all about offering extra choice and opportunities to consumers.

With these DS centres, anyone can download a demo to their DS and try them first hand for themselves. And by putting the DS into sleep mode, they can take the demo away to show friends and family,” said a Nintendo spokesperson.

As far as we know, nothing like this has been done at retail in the UK before. We’re looking closely at the reaction from consumers and seeing what the uptake and interest is like.”

As the DS continues to become part of people’s everyday lifestyles, we wanted to offer the console in more colours to appeal to a greater range of people too. Some people might fancy a change and want to make a statement with some of the new strong colours – it’s really about giving people a choice.”

Although Nintendo plans to roll out its DS centres in a ‘steady and consistent’ manner, it has revealed that there are no plans to release any more DS colours.

There are now seven different DS colours available, so we have no plans to release more colours at this time.”
