Nintendo reveals Mario Kart 8 web app

OK, it’s not quite the smartphone app we may have expected but a new Mario Kart 8 web service seems to be a step in the right direction for Nintendo.

Going under the name Mario Kart TV, it will let players access race highlights and, if logged in with their Nintendo Network ID, track their in-game stats.

Nintendo says it will be accessible from most internet enabled devices – namely PCs, tablets and smartphones.

This web service is available even for players without NNIDs, but by logging into the service with an NNID, they will be able to easily find their rankings, videos that their friends have shared, videos of tournaments in which they have participated, and it will be convenient to access this service through smart devices even when they are not at home,” Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata said.

We will work on providing this type of service so that players can enjoy video games more and be in contact with them even when they are not in front of a video game system.”

In January Iwata outlined plans to begin developing an app strategy for the platform holder.

Mario Kart 8 will be released on May 30th.
