NPD: 360 beats PS3 in Red Dead battle

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was the single biggest revenue contributor to the US video games market in May, according to NPD, with total unit sales of its console hitting 195k in the period and revenue reaching $254m (total May revenue hit $823.5m).

It also fared well in the software market, with four of the top ten best selling games in the month being released on the console. May’s star performer, Red Dead Redemption, sold 946k units on Xbox 360 compared to 567k on PS3

The console’s software attach ratio now stands at 8.9 games per machine – an impressive figure.

There’s also been a strong start for the ‘slim’ Xbox 360 S, which launched in the US last month and will hit the UK on July 16th.

We are hearing great feedback from retailers that the new Xbox 360 250GB is experiencing unprecedented demand,” a Microsoft statement read.

Consumers are eager to experience this new console. Strong demand for the new Xbox 360 250GB combined with a $50 price reduction in the US on the Xbox 360 Arcade and Elite consoles, now US$149.99 and US$249.99 respectively, has resulted in a significant sales spike for Xbox 360 since the new console hit shelves on or around June 14th.”
