Otherside Entertainment's follow-up to sci-fi RPG follows Night Dive Studios’ remake of original game

Original System Shock creator returning for sequel

The previously-announced remake of System Shock won’t be the last hurrah for the iconic sci-fi RPG.

Night Dive Studios – the developer responsible for revamping the first System Shock in the form of its Enhanced Edition – revealed back in November that it was completely remaking the 1994 title.

It also added that it was weighing up the possibility of a sequel to the first two games.

Well, now that sequel is a reality, thanks to Otherside Entertainment.

Otherside was founded by Paul Neurath, who also co-founded original System Shock creator Looking Glass Studios – which sold the IP to Star Insurance Company, before it passed the rights onto Night Dive Studios.

Neurath’s team, which is also working on Ultimate Underworld spiritual successor Underworld Ascendant, posted up a mysterious timer page on its website earlier this week. The only thing accompanying the countdown was the letter ‘S’.

As the internet has a tendency to do, a member of the RPG Codex forums soon cracked open the website’s code, uncovering a second URL with the full reveal: System Shock 3.

This was seemingly confirmed by the reveal of a mailing list, which explicitly states it is for ‘System Shock 3’.

Within the page’s source code lies the description: “Join the original team behind Ultima Underworld on a quest to rekindle this legendary fantasy RPG series.”

Underworld Ascendant was crowdfunded on Kickstarter – making a similar method likely for the new System Shock. All may become clear when the timer hits zero next week.
