Original Xbox games could become backwards compatible on Xbox One

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has said that backwards compatibility for original Xbox games has not been ruled out.

When asked on Twitter about the possibility of the oldest Xbox games coming to the Xbox One, Spencer said: We haven’t ruled it out but we aren’t working on it right now. I’d like to find the time to do it.”

While that certainly isn’t confirmation that it will happen any time soon it is positive news for anyone hoping to play some of the classics from the early 2000’s on their new machine.

Many Xbox 360 titles have been backwards compatible on the Xbox One for a while now, although there is still a large chunk of the 360’s library that is not available on the latest console.

Not one to stay out of the headlines for long, Spencer also spoke about Xbox Play Anywhere to PC Authority. In the interview he mentioned that he thinks third party publishers will eventually support the Xbox Play Anywhere program, although it may take some time.

I’d say some of the bigger traditional third party publishers, they want to see how this works out for us,” said Spencer. There’s always a fear that ‘are you giving away two games for the price of one?’ I’ll say I think there are very few people that actually buy a game twice, once on PC, once on console. So really what you’re doing is you’re just allowing the customer you already have to play your game more often.”
