A new independent games studio called Pixel Mine has opened in Austin, Texas, hoping to challenge the traditional games business model with a new community and microtransaction service that focuses on short play games with high-production values.
The company is set to debut the new service along with a currently unannounced first-party game during the Austin GDC, which runs from September 5th to 7th.
Founders at the studio have previously worked on the likes of Ultima, Wing Commander, Deus Ex and Medal of Honor.
"Publishers and developers today have to satisfy stockholders, retailers and even their accounting departments before they even think about the games. At Pixel Mine, we’re committed to keeping our games fun while keeping our community involved in the process," says Pixel Mine president David Reese.
