PlayStation VR might be priced and dated at event next month

Sony has begun sending out invites for a PlayStation VR press event in San Francisco next month.

The platform is holding an exclusive press event on March 15th, as reported by IGN. The invitation (below) promises a PlayStation VR presentation and hands-on demos.

PlayStation VR is pegged for release in the first half of this year, so we wouldn’t be surprised if price point and release date announcements are on the cards.

According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, if PlayStation VR has a sub-$500 price point it will ‘dominate’.

Rival headsets Oculus Rift has a price point of 500 ($599), while HTC Vive VR is launching with a price tag of $800.

PlayStation VR was announced as Project Morpheus, and renamed in September 2015. In an interview last year, SCE CEO Andrew House said that PlayStation VR will ‘be priced as a new gaming platform’.

And though Sony has named a H1 release window for PlayStation VR, GameStop’s CEO says it may launch as late as this autumn. According to Sony boss Kaz Hirai, ‘about 100 or more’ titles are in development for the new tech.
