PS3 and 360 versions of Black Ops 3 will miss series’ 60fps benchmark

Although games running at 30 frames per second are pretty standard nowadays, Call of Duty is a series that has always valued the benefits of 60fps.

However, it has now been confirmed that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of this year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will fall well short of this benchmark.

I’d say that we tried to hit that target [60fps]," Beenox creative director Thomas Wilson told Develop. "It becomes harder when you’re working on current gen platforms. We’re basically looking more at something like 30fps. But still, the experience is very enjoyable, otherwise it’s not Call of Duty.”

Such a remark is a far cry from the thoughts of Treyarch’s game design director David Vonderhaar who in 2012 ahead of the release of Black Ops 2 told Eurogamer: "We think 60 frames is super essential.

"Any time you have any kind of input latency at all, players can feel that. I’m pretty convinced Call of Duty is as popular as it is because of how fluid it can feel. "You can feel the difference, and we go to a lot of trouble to try to keep the game running at 60 frames all the time."

It was revealed last month that the PS3 and 360 versions of Black Ops 3 will be missing another, even more critical feature – the entirety of the game’s single player mode.
