Resident Evil 2 is being remade

Capcom has announced that its 1998 survival horror classic Resident Evil 2 is being remade.

It is going to be a complete remake of the original game produced by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the producer of the Resident Evil HD remake that was released earlier this year.

It’s currently unclear what formats the remake will be coming to. Nor is there a release date pencilled in yet. Nor what the game will actually entail – i.e. will it still be classic survival horror, or a more modern take on the title?

This follows the announcement that Resident Evil 0 was being remade for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360 and PC and will be launching in 2016.

This year’s Resident Evil HD remake and the upcoming Resident Evil 0 port are both simply updates on their GameCube counterparts. Given that this is a complete reworking of a game made in 1998, this could be some time off from release.

In a statement to Videogamer, a Capcom representative said: "We’re pleased to confirm that Resident Evil 2 has been approved for development.

"As the title is only just starting its development cycle we unfortunately don’t have any additional information or assets to share at this time. However, for now we want our fans to know that we appreciate all the feedback and support we’ve received on this title. We’re looking forward to delivering this highly anticipated Resident Evil experience that fans have been waiting for."

He continued: ”It’s been great to see so many positive comments from fans that have pushed the project to get approved. The team here at Capcom Japan really appreciates fans’ passion and support and will do our best to bring fans what they really want."
