Respawn’s Zampella casts doubt on Titanfall’s future

The future of the Titanfall series is looking less certain than previously thought.

Titanfall 2 launched last month to rave reviews, but sales have so far fallen far short of expectations – a fact blamed on EA’s decision to release the game sandwiched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

EA has said that it believes things will pick up for the title and that it is committed to the series for the long-term. But Vince Zampella, the boss of Titanfall developer Respawn, has cast doubt on this assertion.

We don’t know yet,” he told Glixel when asked if his studio would make another game in the series. The game is, critically, a huge success. We’re really happy with all the reviews and the positive sentiment. Sales, it’s too early to tell.

We’d definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that we’ll explore more of it. EA might have announced more.”

At this point an EA publicist pointed out that the publisher has stated its commitment to the franchise. Zampella’s response?

So, whatever the f*** that means.”

When pressed on the timing of the Titanfall 2’s release, he added: If the question was, "Would I rather have this window to myself?" Well, of course. I’m not foolish. I’m not foolish that way, anyway. In other ways, probably.”

Zampella also confirmed that while the studio was aware of the window the game would be releasing in, it was not aware of the exact release timing.

In 2013 Zampella claimed that decisions about the title’s Xbox and PC exclusivity were made by EA without the developer’s knowledge.
