Sega Europe announces ex-Rockstar COO Gary Dale as new president

Sega Europe has a new boss, in the form of returning games industry exec Gary Dale. He will take on the COO and president roles in the company, with responsibility for the overall business and oversight of the five studios under the European wing of the company – namely Creative Assembly, Relic Entertainment, Amplitude Studios, Sports Interactive and Hardlight.

His appointment follows a gap in the senior team at Sega Europe, created when Chris Bergstresser, left by mutual agreement after just four months in the top job. In the meantime, the Miyazake took charge assisted by the senioer management team, including MCV’s Person of the Year: John Clark, EVP of publishing for Sega Europe. With the publisher having a record 2018.

Dale departed Rockstar and Take-Two back in 2009 and has spent the intervening years investing in and managing private equity firms. He commented:

SEGA is an iconic business with a fantastic heritage and I am relishing the challenge of stepping back into a full-time operational role within the games industry. SEGA Europe collaborates with its owned studios in a unique way for a publisher of its size and the opportunity to be a part of that and grow the business out into other areas is an exciting one.”

He will report to Tatsuyuki Miyazaki, Managing Director of the SEGA West Business, who said in a statement:

“Everyone at SEGA Europe and its studios is delighted to welcome Gary to the team. His track record working with some of the biggest names in entertainment and gaming speaks for itself. Myself and the senior management team will be working very closely to support him as he settles into his new role and we’re looking forward to further growth and expansion during his tenure.”

Previous to working at Take-Two, Dale also held senior roles at The Walt Disney Company, BMG, BSkyB and Aardman Animation. His other major games role was with Capcom as European Managing Director.
