Sony sets PS4 sales target at 5m consoles by March 2014

Sony has projected 5m sales for Playstation 4 by the end of its current fiscal year.

Speaking at Sony’s keynote at Tokyo Game Show, CEO Andrew House announced the target for the end of its fiscal year –though failed to specify whether he was referring to the company’s active year or the fiscal year for the machine itself.

Sony president Shuhei Yoshida later clarified on Twitter that the timeframe for the milestone House referred to was indeed for Sony’s fiscal 2013, which concludes on March 31st of next year.

The hardware maker’s current console, Playstation 3 sold 3.5m units in its first full fiscal year – so Sony has set the bar higher for the upcoming release under a considerably tighter deadline.

PlayStation 4 will launch first in North America on November 15th, with Europe following on November 29th. Select Asian markets will receive the console at some point in December and it launches in Japan on Februarly 22nd, 2014.
