Spider-Man: Homecoming gets the ‘VR experience’ treatment

Sony’s upcoming PS4 release is not the only Spider-Man game in the works.

Sony Pictures has announced Spider-Man: Homecoming VR. Unlike the console game, this title is a licensed outing specifically tied to the upcoming film. Also unlike the PS4 title, this does not sound like a full game in the traditional sense.

Indeed, VR owners will be all too accustomed to ‘experiences’ based on popular licenses. We’ve already seen the same treatment handed out to licenses such as Star Wars and Fantastic Beasts.

The video below shows the player popping on the Stark-made high-tech Spidey suit, and then chucking about some barrels and shooting some webbing. There is a brief glimpse of what appears to be some swinging about, although it doesn’t look as if there’s going to be any free city traversal.

Still, at least it will be free for owners of the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR. It’s due for release on June 30th.

Spider-Man is the most beloved superhero in the world, so we knew Spider-Man: Homecoming VR had to be something special,” Sony Pictures’ senior VP of Virtual Reality Jake Zim said.

Fans can wear the suit, fire the new web shooters – THWIP! – and swing through the air in a faceoff with The Vulture. It’s every fan’s fantasy turned into virtual reality.”

On the other end of the Spidey-scale, PS4 title Marvel’s Spider-Man is a more tradtional console game with a full adventure boasting a freely roamable 3D city. Unlike the VR game, this one is a standalone title, with gives Insomniac more creative freedom to do its own thing.
