MODO firm purchases creator of pen-based sketching application Mischief

The Foundry acquires Made With Mischief

VFX specialist The Foundry has acquired Boston-based firm Made With Mischief, adding art applications to its offering.

Made With Mischief’s flagship product Mischief is a pen-based sketching application that allows developers to create digital art in the same way they would with real-life art materials.

The software features patented technology known as Adaptively Sampled Distanced Fields, which provide high-quality stroke rendering, is extremely responsive and accurately represents richer, more complex shapes than traditional vector-based stroke representations.

Made With Mischief with become a wholly owned subsidiary of The Foundry, with staff in London and Shanghai as well as its Boston HQ.

"Made With Mischief brings both immediate and long-term value to The Foundry," said CEO Bill Collis.

"First, this allows us to enter a new market with an offering that’s both powerful and siple to use, ideal for professionals and creative hobbyists alike. Second, Mischief uses a powerful new technology that has massive potential to impact future creative solutions. As we work with Sarah and her team to enhance the current Mischief platform, we’ll identify applications for our design, visual effects and gaming customers as well."

Made With Mischief founder Sarah Frisken will become chief scientist, while The Foundry’s chief sales and marketing officer Christopher Kenessey will become president of Made With Mischief.

The company will also roll out Mischief-Free, a new edition with limited features that will allow devs to sample what the software has to offer.
