Publisher evaluating costs and benefits of porting games to OS

THQ considering Linux for upcoming releases

THQ is considering releasing its future games on Linux following feedback from its recent Humble Bundle, the publisher’s president has said.

Taking to Twitter, Jason Rubin said the company was currently evaluating the costs and benefits of porting its games to the OS, after a strong response from consumers and fans to do so.

“Got the Linux message loud and clear via Humble Bundle feedback. Evaluating cost/benefit as we speak,” he said.

Speaking further with Polygon, the THQ exec admitted the publisher should be looking at communities outside of the dominant operating systems and platforms as they still hold “vibrant communities”.

He added that some fans had said the company should let the community help with porting titles to help cut costs, and that the firm would be looking into anything “that makes sense”.

"The message I took away from a large number of tweets and comments around the THQ Humble Bundle sale is that there are vibrant communities of gamers using other operating systems besides the dominant ones, and a company like THQ should not overlook them,” said Rubin.

"Complicating the analysis (in a positive way), gamers have tweeted inventive ideas to me, such as letting the community help in the porting to bring down costs. THQ is committed to look at anything that makes sense.

"I’m sure we will have more to announced shortly.”

As well as THQ, during the last year Valve has also been investigating releasing its titles and Steam on Linux, and is currently holding a private external beta to test its viability.
