UK’s media darlings hailed

Last night’s Games Media Awards proved to be something of a personal triumph for Pat Garratt. Eurogamer and Future didn’t do too badly, either.

Videogaming247, launched by Garratt in partnership with the Eurogamer Network last year, won the Best Blog category, while the man himself was Best Specialist Writer, Online. The evening then culminated with him being crowned Games Media Legend, following in the footsteps of Gary Penn and Steve Jarratt.

Eurogamer.net, meanwhile, was named Best Website for the third year in a row and Edge retained the Best Magazine title, despite stiff competition from two Imagine titles, GamesTM and Retro Gamer.

The Guardian also successfully defended its title in the National Newspaper category, while Shortlist dislodged FHM in the Mainstream Magazine stakes.

A popular winner on the night was One Life Left. The radio show about videogames that sometimes gets distracted was named Best Broadcast. Regional Games Column of the year was the syndicated Games Addict, by veteran writer Dan Slingsby.

Another crowd favourite was Jon Blyth, who triumphed as Best Writer, Print. This year’s Rising Star, meanwhile, was Mike Channell, of Official Xbox Magazine.
