Unity ties with Allegorithmic

Development platform company Unity has formed a new technical collaboration and business partnership with Allegorithmic, the specialist in texture compression.

The new deal will see Allegorithmic’s Substance toolset integrated into the Unity Engine and Editor in November.

“Unity Technologies is clearly the number one game engine when it comes to online and mobile distribution, and in that way they are a perfect fit for us,” said Allegorithmic CEO Dr Sebastien Deguy.

“Getting into Unity’s massive penetration means our technology is now well on the way to becoming a new game industry standard. We are looking very much forward to seeing exactly how fantastic a tie between our products can be, now both our development teams are committed to making it not only happen, but be truly great.”

In the wake of the immenant release of Unity 3, Unity has confirmed that the Allegorithmic integration will be free to all users of the eagerly anticipated new version of the development platform. The integration is due in November, sometime after the release of Unity 3, which is expected shortly.

“I love Allegorithmic’s tools and the flexibility they provide. The ability to both have tiny texture distribution sizes and high-level parameters for dynamic tweaking is the perfect killer combo,” confirmed Nicholas Francis, Unity Technologies’ chief creative officer.

“Seasoned developers will love the ability to stream huge levels with textures only taking up a few Kb, while newcomers can use the high-level tweaking tools and pre-made substances to get off the ground fast.”

The full feature set Allegorithmic’s Substance tools will be available from within the Unity Editor’s authoring environment. Furthermore, a range of Unity-exclusive substances will be available, along with special deals on production-ready pre-made libraries and workflow ‘painkillers’.
