UPDATED: WipEout to be resurrected

UPDATE 1:In the moments since publication MCV has been contacted by two sources who claim that Evolution is not the new WipEout developer. We will await an official confirmation.

UPDATE 2:Sony has responded with "no comment".

ORIGINAL STORY: Sony is to hand over the WipEout IP to UK developer Evolution Studios, MCV understands.

The series appeared to have come to an end with the closure of fellow Sony studio and series creator Studio Liverpool last month.

However, the IP will now live on, a source close to the matter has said, with MotorStorm creators Evolution Studios assuming control of the franchise. It is unclear whether or not this will impact the development of future MotorStorm titles.

The Twitter account for PS3 title WipEout 2048 tweeted the following earlier this afternoon:

In the last 30 minutes the game’s Facebook page has been updated with the following message:

Good afternoon Pilots. As you may be aware; Studio Liverpool shut its doors on the 22nd of August 2012. It was a very sad day – the end of an era and will never be forgotten. While we wait for news on the future of WipEout, Online play will continue to be supported and there will be plenty of WipEout community events, giveaways and goodies to look forward to! WipEout’s passion will live on – Together we are stronger and together we will keep WipEout alive.”

MCV has contacted Sony for comment.
