IGN Entertainment has announced a partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc (WWE) which will see the brands uniting for 90 minute “WWE x IGN eSports Showdown” livestreams.
The first event took place last night, at 7pm ET, as WWE fans could watch via stream or in person as WWE Superstars threw down in recent release Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
This isn’t the WWE’s first jump into esports, after years of Superstars being self-confessed fans of video games, WWE star Xavier Woods appeared on YouTube as the face of the WWE’s UpUpDownDown gaming channel. The channel, which has over 1m subscribers, showcases Woods enthusiasm but also that of several other WWE athletes, NFL Athletes and more.
IGN provides a slightly bigger audience, reaching over 150 million users every month.
“As the world of esports continues to explode, a video partnership with WWE is the perfect place for IGN Entertainment to showcase exciting new formats for live events,” said Wade Beckett, chief programming officer and SVP of video at IGN in a press release.
“The crossover between IGN’s global fanbase and WWE’s is undeniable and will make for an exhilarating live experience both for fans at the event in New York and for the millions of fans watching the livestream around the world.”
This doesn’t appear to be the last planned livestream for the pair, and no doubt we’ll see the pair come together with another commercial partner sometime soon to compete in other games.
