Next-gen console doubles the number of controllers its predecessor supports

Xbox One to support eight controllers locally

Microsoft’s next console Xbox One will support eight controllers, according to details from an official product page on Xbox.com.

The new controllers will also have a wireless connection range of 30 feet.

Sony has not formally outlined how many DualShock 4 controllers the PS4 will support locally.

However, SCE Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida tweeted yesterday that PS4 will support four controllers simultaneously.

PS3 supports up to seven wireless controllers. There are a fraction of games that support up to seven-player local multiplayer, such as Bomberman Ultra and X-Men Arcade, and a number of sports titles.

Additionally, peripherals for the system, such as PlayStation Move and its sub controller mean that multiple controllers could be connected to the system above the usual four-player limit.

No date has yet been announced for the Xbox One launch, which is thought to be some time in November for the US and a select number of European countries. Other countries in Europe and Japan will not see the console until 2014.

Sony is set to release its PlayStation 4 on November 15th in the US, and November 29th in Europe and Australia.
