Microsoft was ready to announce and release a streaming Xbox device intended to launch shortly after E3.
That’s the claim in a new report from Windows Central.
Shortly before E3 this year reports suggested that Microsoft would announce three devices at the trade event – a slim Xbox One, a more powerful version of the Xbox One and a streaming Xbox device.
The Xbox One S and Xbox Scorpio were indeed revealed, but there was never any mention of the streaming machine.
Windows Central now says that the machine, known internally as ‘Project Hobart’, was pretty much set. An order for 300,000 units was ready to go with a view to launching in the summer, with a retail price of $99. It was designed to run low-spec UWP games and stream full Xbox games to another screen.
However, at some stage plans were changed. Xbox Scorpio, which was due to be kept under wraps, was announced in reaction to the upcoming PS4 Pro reveal, and Hobart was dropped entirely.
It’s not known whether the project will ever resurface.
