Obsidian details its South Park RPG

It’s such a bizarre combination that it might just work – RPG specialist Obsidian is working on a new console RPG based on the cult Canadian South Park IP.

The game is being developed in collaboration with THQ and South Park Digital Studios and is due for release in late 2012, according to GameInformer.

The series’ principal writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone are penning the script for the game and providing some of the voice acting.

The title will begin with players, who assume the role of a silent new kid in town, taking part in a live-action role-playing game which somehow evolves into a real adventure.

Five character classes are available – wizard, rogue, adventurer, paladin and an as of yet unconventional” fifth class. It appears that the action will be in 2D.

Combat will be turn based and everything will be organised and accessed through your character’s smartphone. Amazingly staple RPG features such as weapon augmentations and summons will also feature.

Obsidian’s previous releases include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas and Dungeon Siege III.
