As parent company Take-Two announces worsened financial losses

Xcom reboot delayed following 2K Marin layoffs

An upcoming reboot of the sci-fi shooter game Xcom has been delayed, just weeks after it emerged that a studio working on the game has undergone staff cutbacks.

Last night at an investor call, publishing label 2K announced that the project is now due for an FY12 release. Its parent company, Take-Two, last night announced that losses had deepened during the three months ending September 30th.

Losses hit reached $47 million compared to $8 million for the same quarter in 2010. Revenue fell from $245 million to $107 million year-on-year.

There has been speculation that Xcom was delayed to dodge release schedule clashes with the highly-anticipated sci-fi title Mass Effect 3, which arrives on March 9th.

In October, it emerged that as many as fifteen staff had been let go at 2K Marin’s Australian arm.

The New South Wales studio – formerly known as 2K Canberra – helped with production of titles such as BioShock 2, and is thought to be involved in a new Xcom project.
