Newly-released tech breaks download records

CryEngine becomes ‘fastest-selling’ free SDK

The free-to-use CryEngine has soared past 100,000 downloads within its first week, according to company data.

CryEngine 3 SDK appears to have reached over 108,000 downloads since the tech was offered out as a free tool. A counter on the official CryEngine website suggests that 108,462 downloads have been made in six days.

That figure, if true, makes CryEngine 3 the fastest-downloaded free engine.

When Epic Games released its own free UDK in 2009, the engine was installed about 50,000 times in its first week.

The Unity Engine, meanwhile, had been downloaded about 20,000 times in the first two weeks since it launched as free tech.

The CryEngine 3 SDK is free for non-commercial use and available for PC game development only. Crytek will take a 20 per cent cut of revenue from commercial projects.
