Blu-ray gains High Street momentum

HMV has announced that 40 per cent of sales of The Hurt Locker have been on Blu-ray, suggesting that the appetite for the HD format is reaching a new high.

This is one of the highest proportions for any film release since Blu-ray was launched, and is good news for the buoyant Blu-ray lobby.

The PS3-compatible Blu-ray format was introduced in 2006 but has struggled to assert its position in the market. The sales surge follows The Hurt Locker’s headlining performance at the Oscars.

Rudy Osorio, Head of DVD at HMV said: "DVD sales of The Hurt Locker were always going to surge following its Oscar success, but it’s great to see that so many of them are doing so on Blu-ray.

Its amazing visual and sound effects and spectacular high definition output give it the quality that it deserves."
