DFC Intelligence: Switch to sell 40m by 2020

The Nintendo Switch might be getting a mixed response right now, but research firm DFC Intelligence boldly forecasting the Switch to sell 40m units through 2020, three times that of the Wii U in 4 years.

However, these sales predictions aren’t a million miles away from what the Nintendo 3DS managed (selling 57m over 4 years) or the PlayStation 4 (50m in 3 years). DFC point to the initial hardware allocations and a launch lineup generally perceived as underwhelming as things that could hinder the hybrid consoles initial launch, however they believe demand is expected to be "strong" with the consoles "major issue" being whether or not the system can find a broad audience before Christmas.

DFC Intelligence head David Cole said in a statement: "The Switch is a compelling piece of hardware that could potentially reach a much larger addressable market. However given the limited software and Nintendo’s poor recent track record of introducing new products we have tempered our forecasts to be conservative."

We’ll get a better idea on how accurate this figures are after the launch on March 3rd.
