Company wants to implement gameplay mechanics in traditional non-gaming apps

Ex-Remedy, EA staff open new Finland studio Futurefly

Former Remedy, EA, Sulake and Microsoft staff have opened a new studio in Helsinki, Finland called Futurefly.

The company aims to implement gameplay mechanics to traditional non-game consumer apps. It is currently working on a mobile game messenger that it says will be similar to WhatsApp and WeChat, but will also includes gaming features.

Futurefly has already receiving angel funding and is backed by the Finnish fund for technology and innovation, TEKES.

The studio currently employs nine staff, including Remedy’s head of franchise development Oskari Häkkinen (pictured) as its CPO.

“We are thrilled to be healthily backed by our investors at this stage, both financially and on our vision,” said Häkkinen.

“We are on a mission to disrupt the consumer app space with games on the top of our minds. We are designing consumer apps with playable mechanics as part of the primary input mechanism. This is a new take, and something that is better shown than talked about. Fortunately we are well into the development of our first instalment, so you won’t have to wait too long.”
