Portugal Ventures leads new wave of funding for start-up

Bica Studios closes first seed investment round

Up-and-coming Portuguese developer Bica Studios has just secured its first round of seed investment.

The round was led by Portugal Ventures, with the leading VC firm’s Marcos Osorio also joining Bica’s board of directors. Nuno Conclaves Pedro, currently managing partner of San Francisco-based VC fund Strive Capital also joins the board.

While the exact amount of funding raised is now mentioned, the capital will be used to help Bica Studios continue developing its portfolio and reputation as casual gaming studio. The studio is due to release its newest title, Smash Time, soon.

Focused on mobile games, Bica Studios is one of many gaming start-ups in Portugal. The firm claims more studios have opened doors in the region during the last year than in the previous decade.

“We are betting on mobile because of its potential to reach hundreds of millions of players and for being the perfect medium to show our games,” said co-founder Miguel Tomas.

“That said, we are keeping an eye on emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality in order to explore new ways of entertainment.”

Bica Studios was listed in the European Start-ups edition of our Develop 100 back in 2013.
