Tech built for use with mobile phones and set for release this year

Samsung moves into virtual reality with Gear VR headset

Samsung has unveiled its own virtual reality headset.

Gear VR, revealed at the Samsung Unpacked event, uses the 5.7 inch Quad HD super AMOLED display of the newly announced Galaxy Note 4 to operate the tech.

The headset is the result of a partnership between Samsung and Rift creator Oculus, and is powered by technology developed by the Facebook-owned company. The headset is solely for use with mobile.

Samsung plans to launch its VR headset this year – before the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus.

?"We are thrilled to reveal the Gear VR Innovator Edition, a state-of-the-art mobile VR experience powered by Oculus," said Oculus CTO John Carmack.

"The deep technical partnership with Samsung has enabled us to create a virtual reality headset with world class resolution and performance, all on a completely mobile platform."
