Notch to disband Mojang after 10 years if no longer profitable

Mojang will shut its doors a decade after its formation if the developer isn’t turning a profit, company founder Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has revealed.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Persson divulged his long-term vision for the studio formed to oversee the development of his indie game turned empire Minecraft; along with other projects such as Scrolls and (the recently shelved) 0x10c.

"Hopefully, we are going to keep making money at Mojang,” Persson said. But if we don’t, that’s fine.”

"We just have 10 fun years, and then, the last year, we’d say to our employees, ‘If we don’t make any money this year, Mojang is going to be dead.  So you might want to look for new jobs.’"

Scrolls is profitable, but making peanuts” compared to Minecraft’s numbers – which have showed little sign of slowing as the game continues to conquer platform after platform. Minecraft is currently available on PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Xbox 360, and PS3 – PS4, Vita, and Xbox One versions are in the works for later this year.
